Fire Retardant Silicone Hose

Silflex flame retardant hose has been specifically designed for the demanding requirements of mass transit applications. Generally it is used in applications that require the material to be flame-retardant and give off low smoke & low toxic fumes. This compound has been tested against BS6853 & AFNOR NFF 16-101. It is classified as category II AGAINST BS 6853 & AS F1,IO against NFF16-101.

 

 

Construction

 

Plies of flame retardant silicone, reinforced with polyester fabric. The number of plies will vary depending on the working pressure, bore size, and required wall thickness. A galvanised spring steel wire helix may also be added for high or low pressure applications, or where extra flexibility is required.

As a result of our unique manufacturing process we are extremely flexible with production volumes. Silflex has a very diverse range of customers and we understand that each requires individual silicone hose solutions. Many specialist customers require low run and prototype orders however others need high volume mass produced parts. Significant factors influencing design include the maximum application pressures, operating temperature ranges (internal and external), fluid or gases to be carried, vibration and flexing, misalignment, fixing and location. Hygienic & Sterile Silicone Hose

The Silgiene® lined silicone hose has been specifically developed to minimise the risk of contamination of the fluid or air carried by the hose from trace level extractable materials found in conventional silicones e.g. Siloxanes, while still giving all of the service benefits expected from Samco/Silflex silicone hoses. While it is suitable for use in a wide range of chemical fluid/gas transfer applications where the risk of contamination needs to be minimised it also meets the demands of applications ranging from motorsport and high performance bikes & cars through bus, truck and rail industry requirements while also being suitable for use in hygienic and sterile environments.

 

 

General Use

 

Developed to meet the quality requirements and exacting standards of today's pharmaceutical and biotechnical industries. In particular to resist extremes of temperature and the high wear rate of the peristaltic pump. Extremely resistant to ozone, UV concentrations and a wide range of chemicals, this tubing contains no sulphur or acid producing extracts to leach into your product. Special bore and wall thicknesses, degrees of hardness, colour and cross sections are available to minimum order. Repetitive cutting and fabrication to tolerance is available to suit your manufacturing needs. Stock range dimensional tolerance to BS3734.

 

Construction

 

A liner of Silgiene® translucent silicone overlaid with plies of silicone reinforced with polyester fabric. The number of reinforcing plies varies with hose bore to suit the pressure rating. Plies are knitted polyester cloth impregnated with silicone. Smooth line bore for clear flow with smooth outer skin of silicone for complete integrity. A convoluted outer is also offered as an alternative for increased flexibility.

 

Specifically for water transfer, plies of silicone, reinforced with polyester fabric & lined with Water Regulations Approved White Silicone. The number of plies will vary depending on the working pressure, bore size, and required wall thickness.

 

Pressure Range

 

The Silgiene® mandrel built polyester reinforced hygienic hose is manufactured to meet a standard pressure safety factor of 3:1. (Please advise of your anticipated operating pressures before ordering). For applications requiring ‘high’ operating pressures see operating pressures below.

 

The Silgiene® mandrel built wire reinforced hygienic hose range is designed to operate in environments with working pressures of between 6 and 10 bar working or full vacuum. Please advise before ordering of any requirement beyond 10 bar. Standard pressure safety factor, 3:1.

Water Regulation Approved

 

Silflex Silicone hose with Polyester Reinforcement & Water Regulations Approved White Silicone Lining has been designed for carrying clean water and conforms to Water Regulations Advisory Scheme standards. (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS), approval number 0412511.) It can however be used in many applications where the properties of silicone are preferable to those of other rubbers, or where a flexible joint is required between rigid pipes.

 

FDA Approved

 

Manufactured using a platinum cured silicone elastomer which is compositionally compliant with FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 and USP Class VI standards. Silgiene® hoses are ideally suited for clean industry process/production use. Silflex translucent hose has been specifically designed for food, brewery and chemical applications.

Foams & Sponges

Silicone rubbers are substances whose chemical skeleton is made up of extremely stable silicon - oxygen linkages. Silicone rubbers are chemically related to quartz and glass and many of their excellent properties are similar to those of the latter materials. The molecular structure of silicone avoids the rigidity of the organic groups on every atom and during vulcanisation they are cross linked to form a three dimensional, flexible, rubber like substance. Inorganic fillers are embedded in the latticework structure and have a decisive effect on the general properties due to the reciprocal action between the filler and high siloxanes. As with other kinds of rubber, the physical and chemical properties of silicone may be varied by the appropriate selection of filler and catalyst.

 

 

Product Characteristics

 

After vulcanisation the general appearance of expanded silicone is a fine non-interconnecting cell structure encapsulated by a soft smooth outer skin. Density of structure is varied to suit the required application. Skin tear resistance varies with density. Due to the severe blowing action during vulcanisation there can be an element of curve along the length and cross sectional surface of the extrusion and is particularly evident on thin wide strip. Every effort is made to minimise this effect.

 

Chemical Resistance

 

Generally, silicone is resistant to moderate or oxidizing chemicals, but is attacked by many solvents, oils and concentrated acids when in direct contact.

 

Compression Recovery

 

We do not generally recommend a compression loading greater than 25% when used in working temperatures between 100°C to 200°C. Structure collapse will occur on loading above 25% and an increase in compression set is more evident on thinner sections.

General Properties

 

  • Resistance to ultra-violet light, corona, arcing and ozone is good.
  • Oxidation, which quickly destroys organic elastomers is virtually non existent with silicone rubber.
  • With a low degree of moisture absorption the mechanical properties show little change, even after long periods of immersion. However, superheated water will cause the silicone to break down after continuous immersion.
  • Expanded silicone possesses valuable non-stick properties.
  • Silicone rubber is little affected by moisture in the form of free steam. However, with increased pressure, effects upon the structure of the rubber become greater. Expanded silicone is not recommended for long term service where steam pressure exceeds 50 psi.
  • Expanded silicone is excellent for Vibration damping, protecting and cushioning components, seals and gasketry.

 

Temperature Limitations

 

Samco expanded silicone offers designers a versatile product capable of withstanding temperatures from -60°C up to +200°C continuous use. Exposure at elevated temperatures will have a limiting effect on the life of this material.

Manufactured using 2,4 dichlorobenzoyl peroxide catalyst specifically for laboratory and medical use (not implant, telephone for information on peroxide free products). Material meets FDA 177.2600, USP XX/XX1, BGA XV and EP VI.1.3.2. Every effort is made to maintain minimum DCBA levels following post cure.

Reinforced Silicone Tubing

Siligiene®: A continuously extruded translucent reinforced silicone rubber tubing. Standard reinforcement of glass fibre braiding sandwiched between vulcanised layers of silicone rubber. A working temperature of 220°C is therefore attainable with hot air sterilization to 250°C. Vapour sterilization to 3.8 bar. Every coil is tested to recommended working pressure (Din 20024). Stock bore size range 3.0mm to 25.4mm. Silicone rubber liner material to FDA 177.2600, USP XX/XX1, BGA XV and EP VI.1.3.2 (silicone elastomer for closures and tubing).

 

 

Working Pressure

 

A 200% factor of safety is applied to recommended reinforced tubing working pressures. Working pressures stated are at 20°C, temperatures over 100°C will result in a decrease in working pressure, consult samco.co.uk for further information. Higher working pressure and variation in specification to minimum order.

 

Grade Options

 

Silicone compounds can be engineered to suit a particular requirement or specification, for example, limits of temperature, fire resistance/flammability etc. High temperature variants can be engineered to 315°C continuous working.

 

Variations in colour to BS or RAL spec numbers available to special order (chart available).

 

Braid, pitch and gauge varied along with silicone thickness to achieve variation in pressure rating.

 

FDA and WRC approved elastomers. Variations in silicone compound, colour and braid reinforcement to order. Alternatively, over braided nylon, polyester and glass thread for pressure applications when external cleanliness is not required.
